Training Tips

Improve Your Deadlift Score

Drive through your heels and keep the hex bar close to your body throughout the lift. A loose bar path bleeds power.

Brace your core before every rep, take a deep breath, lock in, then lift. Losing your brace between reps is the most common cause of form breakdown.

Train the hip hinge, not just the deadlift. Romanian deadlifts and good mornings build the posterior-chain strength that transfers directly to your MDL score.

Test your 3-rep max monthly at sub-max weights (85–90% effort) to track progress without overloading the central nervous system before test day.

On test day, warm up with two lighter sets (50% and 75% of your target), then take your test attempts. Do not skip the warm-up, cold lifts hurt scores and backs.

FAQ

Deadlift Frequently Asked Questions

What weight is the minimum passing MDL score?+
205 lbs equals exactly 60 points, which is the minimum passing score for the deadlift event. Below 205 lbs results in a failing score.
Can I use a straight bar instead of a hex bar for the ACFT deadlift?+
No. The ACFT requires a specific hex (trap) bar. The hex bar keeps the load closer to your center of gravity, making it more accessible and reducing lower-back strain compared to a straight-bar deadlift.
How many attempts do I get on the MDL?+
Soldiers get up to three attempts at the same weight, or may increase the weight between attempts. The highest successfully completed 3-rep set counts as your score.
Does grip strength matter for the MDL?+
Yes, significantly. Grip failure is common at heavier loads. Train farmers carries, dead hangs, and plate pinches in addition to your deadlift programming.
What is the maximum MDL score?+
340 lbs earns 100 points, the maximum. 320 lbs scores 90 points. Between 320 and 340 lbs there is a non-linear jump, so pushing past 320 lbs has a big payoff.
