Training Tips

Improve Your Power Throw Score

Load the hips first, dip deep with a fast countermovement, then explode upward before releasing the ball. The throw is mostly legs, not arms.

Practice the specific release angle. Most soldiers throw too flat or too straight up. Aim for roughly 45 degrees behind vertical for maximum distance.

Train explosive hip extension with kettlebell swings, broad jumps, and box jumps. These movements mirror the power-transfer pattern of the power throw.

Grip the ball firmly but not white-knuckle tight. Tension in your forearms will slow your arm speed and reduce distance at release.

On test day, do 3–4 practice throws at ~70% effort before your scored attempts to prime your nervous system without fatiguing your muscles.

Power Throw Frequently Asked Questions

How heavy is the medicine ball for the ACFT Standing Power Throw?+
The ball weighs 10 pounds (4.5 kg). Every soldier uses the same 10-pound ball, there is no gender or age variation for this event.
What is the minimum passing distance for the SPT?+
7.3 meters equals 60 points and is the minimum passing score. Distances below 7.3 meters result in a failing score for this event.
Can I step forward when throwing?+
No. You must throw from a standing position without stepping out of the designated throwing area. Stepping forward during the throw results in a foul and the attempt does not count.
How many attempts do I get?+
Soldiers receive two scored attempts, and the best (longest) throw counts toward the final score.
What training exercises best improve the power throw distance?+
Overhead medicine ball slams, kettlebell swings, broad jumps, hang cleans, and seated overhead medicine ball throws are the most effective exercises for building SPT-specific power.
