Training Tips

Improve Your Two-Mile Run Score

Run the first mile at your goal pace or slightly slower, do not sprint out. The most common 2MR mistake is positive splitting (going out too fast and dying in mile 2). Aim for even or negative splits.

Use a run-walk strategy if you are still building base fitness. Run 800m at a hard effort, walk 30 seconds, repeat. This is more effective for score improvement than gutting out a slow run.

Train at your goal pace weekly. If you want to run a 15:00 two-mile, do 400m repeats at 1:52 pace. Your body adapts to the specific speeds you train at.

Build your aerobic base with easy runs 3–4 days per week at a pace where you can hold a full conversation. Base fitness is the foundation that speed work builds on.

Practice pacing by using a GPS watch or track during training. Knowing your exact pace at each quarter mile allows you to make adjustments before it is too late.

FAQ

Two-Mile Run Frequently Asked Questions

What is the minimum passing time for the ACFT Two-Mile Run?+
14:54 (14 minutes and 54 seconds, or 894 seconds) earns exactly 60 points. Times slower than 14:54 result in a failing score. The 100-point time is 13:30 or faster.
Is the ACFT two-mile run the same as the old APFT run?+
Yes, the event is physically the same, a 2-mile timed run on a flat measured course. The scoring tables are different, but the event format, distance, and general requirements are unchanged.
Can I walk during the Two-Mile Run?+
Yes, there is no rule against walking. However, walking at a typical pace during the 2MR will result in a time well below the passing standard. The minimum passing pace requires running approximately 7:27 per mile continuously.
What is the course like for the ACFT two-mile run?+
The course must be a measured 2-mile (3.2 km) route on a hard surface. Treadmill runs are not authorized for official ACFT testing.
How does pace translate to ACFT score for the 2MR?+
A 13:30 time (6:45/mile) scores 100 points. A 15:00 time (7:30/mile) scores about 56 points. A 14:54 time is required to pass. Use our calculator above to look up the exact score for any finish time.
